If you’re looking to experience local culture while at the Anchorage Beach Resort, may we suggest a village tour? You have a choice of two villages: neighboring Viseisei Village - home of Fiji’s first settlers and Navala Village in the Ba Highlands - the most traditional of all Fijian villages. Here you can see firsthand how indigenous Fijians have lived throughout the ages and still do to this very day.
Your visit starts with a yaqona (kava) ceremony with the village chief to officially welcome you into the village as a guest. Next, you are a taken on a tour of the village grounds, where you can see bure - traditional Fijian architecture and villagers going about their daily lives.
There a number of activities you could participate in at the villages including: swimming in the river or sea, catching octopus, basket and mat making, spear and net fishing, bush walks, learning fun Fijian dances, visiting a Fijian classroom, mountain climbing or learning to sing a Fijian song. You must also try some delicious lovo - that is food cooked the traditional way, over hot stones in an earth oven.
We recommend you make a village visit part of your Fiji itinerary; the experience will be etched indelibly in your memories. |
